c. 1920; Prospect Street Pottery - Galena, IL

Green-glazed stoneware crock produced as political campaign advertising for James M. Cox, Democratic presidential candidate in the 1920 U.S. presidential election. The vessel features a classic early 20th-century Midwestern stoneware form with a slightly flared rim, rounded shoulder, and straight-sided body, finished in a deep, mottled green glaze typical of Illinois River Valley production. The front is boldly impressed "COX FOR CONGRESS," applied before firing, giving the lettering crisp definition and permanence rather than surface-applied decoration. Subtle throwing rings remain visible beneath the glaze, reinforcing the piece's utilitarian origins.

The lower oval maker's mark reads "PROSPECT STREET POTTERY," with the location partially worn but identifiable as Galena, Illinois, a well-documented regional pottery center. Prospect Street Pottery was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is known for both utilitarian wares and promotional stoneware, including political campaign vessels. The combination of a Galena pottery and an Ohio-born presidential candidate reflects the widespread production and distribution of campaign advertising ceramics during this period.

Shows light surface wear consistent with age and use, including minor glaze abrasions and kiln-related surface variation. No cracks or repairs observed; rim and body remain structurally sound with strong glaze retention throughout.
