19th Century Andrews #4 Folding School Bench Desk

Oak and wrought iron double school bench with rear desk.

This piece was salvaged from an abandoned school in the Midwest. It was fabricated by A.H. Andrews, a prominent Chicago-based manufacturer of school furniture and theater seating. The desk features a grooved seat and back rest, giving some early ergonomic support. The cast iron hardware is a deep black and and includes intricate scrollwork. The embossed "4" on the cast iron refers to the recommended age group for this particular desk, which is "First Intermediate" or ages 10-13. This desk is able to fold up to save on space.

Exhibits minor signs of wear including scratches/scuffs.

We ship smaller objects with UPS and USPS. All shipments are fully insured and adhere to carrier packing guidelines. Shipping costs for smaller items being shipped within the continental United States are free up to $100. If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. Please reach out to us for a free shipping quote on items you are interested in purchasing and note that international shipments may incur additional shipping cost.


We work with a number of freight carriers and private drivers, and are happy to assist buyers in finding suitable shipping arrangements for large items. Please reach out to us for quotes and more information about your shipping options. 

Please note that buyers are responsible for the shipping costs of all items that are too large to ship parcel. Moreover, all shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the responsibility for the shipment passes to the buyer the moment the shipment leaves our dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles.


All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
