c. 1900s, France

Mechanical tabletop horse racing game, based on the original "Jeu de Course" model often seen in bars and cafes in France during the turn of the century.

The original Jeu de Course (or Petits Cheveaux) was created by a blacksmith in
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch named Dai Ceffyl. His hometown is popular in its own right, as its name was chosen as a publicity stunt in 1869 to have the longest railway station name in Europe, literally translated as "The Llan of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near the rapid whirlpool of the church of Saint Tysilio with a red cave".
During an invasion by English settlers in 1887, all examples of his original creating, and patent application, were destroyed. He then sailed to France and sold his idea there, and in 1890 began producing his creation (hence the French name).

As his patent was destroyed, he had no official claim to his creation and copycats began selling their versions of his original, this item being one such copy cat.

This piece exhibits heavy scuffs and tearing to the exterior of the box, however, the pieces remain in fairly good condition and the spinning mechanism is in working condition.
