c. 1900s - 1910s; Bromann Bros. - Chicago

Antique butcher shop prep and presentation counter.

Many butcher shop counters were designed with dual purposes in mind as they often worked as both a prep surface and presentation area. As such, an eye-catching look was required, which led to the addition of a marble top. Marble was chosen for both its durability and ease of cleaning, as it (despite being a porous stone) has antibacterial properties.

This piece features small pyrite inclusions within the marble and a wooden frame constructed of quartersawn oak; it sits on turned legs that end in tapered feet.

Despite its antibacterial properties, the porous nature of marble allows stains to set in easier, as they have on this counter; there is some slight yellowing on the left (as shot) side.
