Antique wood and wrought iron figural trade sign for a pawnbroker.

This piece takes the form of the classic "three-ball symbol" used by pawnbrokers. The design can be directly attributed to the Medici Family in Florence, an Italian banking family and political dynasty under the House of Medici, founded in 1230.
The three-ball symbol, associated with pawn shops, traces back to Lombardy, Italy, where pawn banking began as "Lombard banking." The golden balls may have originated as flat images of gold coins but evolved into balls for visibility. In medieval Europe, pawn shops were often called "Lombards," after the Lombard banking community in London. Legend ties the symbol to the Medici family, who adopted it as a crest after a Medici, under Charlemagne, killed a giant with three bags of rocks. As successful bankers, the Medicis inspired other families to use the symbol. Additionally, Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of pawnbrokers, is linked to the three balls through a story of him gifting three bags of gold to a poor man's daughters for their dowries.

This particular sign features the three balls, constructed from wood and suspended from individual curved wrought iron brackets.

Exhibits moderate signs of wear including splits (including one severe crack), paint loss, and rust on the iron bracket.

Shipping costs for smaller items being shipped within the continental United States are free up to $100. If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. FREIGHT SHIPPING

We work with a number of freight carriers and private drivers, and are happy to assist buyers in finding suitable shipping arrangements for large items. Please reach out to us for quotes and more information about your shipping options. 

Please note that buyers are responsible for the shipping costs of all items that are too large to ship parcel. Moreover, all shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the responsibility for the shipment passes to the buyer the moment the shipment leaves our dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
