late-19th-century-mahogany-rotating-teawear-cabinet-by-jackson
Late 19th Century Mahogany Rotating Teawear Cabinet by Jackson

c. 1892-1893; Jackson Office Furn. Co. - Jackson, Tennessee

Exceptional four-sided rotating teaware cabinet constructed with a mahogany body over an oak base and cast-iron revolving mechanism. Two opposing faces are fitted with full-height locking tambour doors, each concealing 23 graduated horizontal storage slots. A third face contains a tall paneled door opening to four shelf compartments, while the remaining face incorporates a small upper cabinet above six graduated drawers.

The numerous compartments provide organized storage for trays, utensils, linens, serving pieces, and other tea-related wares. Its rotating construction allows each storage face to be brought forward while maintaining a relatively compact footprint. Decorative details include cast-iron label-holder pulls with brass inserts, brass keyhole escutcheons, brass hinges, raised-panel sides, a deeply molded cornice, and a molded plinth base.

Jackson Office Furniture Co. manufactured specialized wooden cabinets in Jackson, Tennessee, during the late 19th century. The brass maker's plate reads "JACKSON OFFICE FURN. CO / JACKSON, TENN / PAT. MAY 1892 MAY 1893," identifying the maker, place of manufacture, and associated patent dates.

The cabinet has undergone a restorative finish treatment. Its original shellac exhibited multiple dry or depleted areas; the surviving topcoat was revived through amalgamation, restoring depth and color while reducing the visual prominence of scratches and scuffs. The surface was subsequently protected with three sprayed coats of polyurethane. Age-related wear remains throughout, including scattered scratches, abrasions, small dents, finish variation, dark spotting and staining across the top, edge wear, and chips and scuffs along the plinth. Interior shelves, slots, and drawer boxes exhibit staining, scratches, discoloration, and wear consistent with prolonged use. Metal hardware shows patina, tarnish, and localized oxidation. The tambour assemblies, drawers, hinged doors, and cast-iron rotating mechanism remain present and are shown opened or extended in the photographs.

• Exterior: 28.25" W x 28.5" D x 57.25" H
• Single-door section, top shelf: 8.5" W x 8" D x 12" H
• Single-door section, second shelf: 8.5" W x 8" D x 11" H
• Single-door section, third and fourth shelves: 8.5" W x 8" D x 12" H each
• Tambour-door openings: 22.25" W x 45" H each
• Each tambour section contains 23 slots
• Top nine tambour slots: 22.25" W x 3" D x 1.5" H each
• Middle seven tambour slots: 22.25" W x 4" D x 1.5" H each
• Bottom seven tambour slots: 22.25" W x 5" D x 1.5" H each
• Upper cabinet: 8.375" W x 15.125" D x 12" H
• First and second drawers: 7.875" W x 14.25" D x 4" H each
• Third drawer: 7.875" W x 14.25" D x 4.5" H
• Fourth through sixth drawers: 7.875" W x 14.25" D x 6" H each

MM - 22226 - 102326

This piece will need to ship via freight.
