The photographic image has been extensively enhanced by hand, with carefully modeled facial features, clothing details, and muted green floral accents in the background. It is housed beneath convex glass in a substantial oval frame decorated with a reddish-brown faux wood-grain finish and contrasting black moldings. The frame retains its original-style paper backing and hanging wire.

Crayon enlargements combined a faint, enlarged photographic print with hand-applied charcoal, pastel, chalk, or watercolor. Popular from the late 19th through the early 20th century, the process provided families with an affordable, wall-sized alternative to a traditionally painted portrait.

Portrait appears to be in good overall condition, as does the frame. The frame exhibits scattered scratches, a small dark stain, and a small crack. Backing paper is stained, brittle, and torn in several areas. One nail head protrudes from the back and should be handled with care. Hanging wire remains attached.

23.5" L x 2.25" W x 17.75" H

MM - C-22705 - 102826

For information regarding shipping, please visit our Terms & Conditions page here.

https://industrialartifacts.net/products/late-19th-century-victorian-couple-crayon-portrait-under-convex-glass
