vintage-hand-built-mechanical-tilting-hospital-bed-respirator-patent-model
Vintage Hand-Built Mechanical Tilting Hospital Bed / Respirator Patent Model

1930s/1940s

Highly unusual hand-built mechanical medical demonstration or patent model housed in its original fitted wooden carrying case. The green-painted apparatus is constructed primarily from carved wood with metal gears, rods, cranks, pulleys, a large flywheel, drive belt, and adjustable safety stop. A miniature patient figure rests within an articulated bed that can be raised from a horizontal position to a near-vertical orientation. The mechanism appears intended to demonstrate a motor-assisted tilting or rocking bed-a form of artificial-respiration equipment related to, but mechanically distinct from, the enclosed negative-pressure machine commonly known as an iron lung. The figure, working mechanisms, and portable case suggest that the model may have been made for patent, engineering, instructional, or sales-presentation purposes. No manufacturer's markings are visible.

During the 1930s, experimental respiratory technologies expanded in response to respiratory paralysis associated with polio. Alongside enclosed iron lungs, inventors developed rocking beds that used the patient's weight and gravity to move the diaphragm and assist breathing.

The wooden model is in good overall condition with scattered paint loss, scratches, abrasions, and surface wear, particularly where moving components rub against one another. The crank that raises the bed from horizontal to vertical operates, as does the stopping or safety mechanism. The belt intended to move the bed horizontally is frayed and has lost tension, preventing belt-driven movement, although the associated pulley can be turned manually. One upright at the head of the bed is cracked at its lower end, allowing slight movement. One retaining-screw hole in the bed lid has broken out, but the screw continues to secure the lid. The demonstration figure exhibits paint wear, surface marks, and heavily creased and frayed clothing.

The original carrying case is fragile and exhibits extensive age-related deterioration. The top is slightly caved in with lifting, splitting, and missing veneer. Additional veneer cracks and separations are present across the front, back, and right side. The deteriorated top handle is frayed and partially detached, while the side handles remain sturdy. The closing and locking portion of the front latch has broken away. The case also exhibits scratches, staining, finish wear, edge losses, open seams, and general wear from age, use, and storage. Careful handling is recommended.

Case, including all handles: 22" L x 9.75" W x 12" H

MM - 22859 - 102726

For information regarding shipping, please visit our Terms & Conditions page here.

https://industrialartifacts.net/products/vintage-hand-built-mechanical-tilting-hospital-bed-respirator-patent-model
