c. 1930s - 1940s; manufactured by Vergne Artware/West Coast Industries Inc. - Oakland, CA

Vintage B.P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) cast bronze bookends.

These two pieces feature the figural head of an elk with the antlers bordering around the "11th Hour Toast" clock. From the Elks website:
"At every meeting of the BPOE, and every social function, when the hour of 11:00 p.m. tolls, the Lodge conducts a charming ceremonial known as the 'Eleven O'clock Toast.'"
Along the bottom of the elk's head is the Latin phrase used by the organization, "Cervus alces", which is the binomial nomenclature for the American elk.

Exhibits minor signs of wear and patina.

5.5" W x 2" D x 6" H
