c. 1940s; National Carbon Co./Union Carbide - New York City

Vertical porcelain-enameled steel advertising thermometer produced for Prestone Anti-Freeze, featuring the classic shield-shaped Prestone logo at top and the safety slogan "You're Safe... And You Know It" in a red oval at the base. The central glass thermometer tube is flanked by dual temperature scales, with markings indicating both ambient temperature and the freezing point reference associated with anti-freeze protection. The bold blue, white, and red color scheme reflects Prestone's mid-century automotive branding and was designed for high visibility in service stations, garages, and auto supply counters.

Prestone was one of the most widely marketed automotive anti-freeze products of the mid-20th century, promoted heavily through durable shop signage like this to reinforce reliability and cold-weather safety. Manufactured by National Carbon Company, a division of Union Carbide, these porcelain thermometers combined functional temperature reading with brand messaging, making them a staple of American roadside and garage advertising during the postwar automotive boom.

Shows chips to the porcelain enamel, most noticeable along edges and raised contours, with scattered surface wear consistent with long-term service station use. The thermometer tube is intact, in good condition, and appears to function properly.
