Hunter (1887-1988) was a self-taught Black outsider artist born in Louisiana who lived and worked on the Melrose Plantation, one of the largest estates built by and for free Blacks.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nShe spent the first half of her life as a laborer, and never had the opportunity to learn how to read or write.
