c. 1870s-1890s; Joseph T. Ryerson & Son - Chicago

Cast metal salesman sample illustrating the internal construction of an industrial boiler, presented as a longitudinal cross-section mounted on its original wooden base. The model exposes flues, firebox passages, baffles, and heat chambers in layered relief, allowing customers to visually understand airflow, combustion, and heat transfer within the boiler shell. Details such as riveted seams, access ports, and stepped internal chambers closely mirror full-scale boiler construction of the period, translated into compact demonstration form.

This model was supplied by Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, a major Chicago-based supplier of railway, boiler, and industrial equipment, as indicated by the original fitted wooden case bearing the firm's brass identification plaque. Ryerson salesmen used pieces like this during site visits and trade demonstrations to explain engineering advantages to railroad operators, factory owners, and municipal buyers at a time when boilers were critical infrastructure for power, heating, and transportation.

Shows uniform age patina across the metal surfaces, with surface oxidation and handling wear consistent with long-term use. Wooden base and original case show finish wear, edge abrasion, and darkening from age. No major losses observed; model remains structurally intact and visually complete.
