Antique Rockingham-Glazed Ceramic Spittoon
Rockingham-glazed ceramic spittoon featuring a low, wide form with a scalloped body and integral splash guard. Finished in a mottled brown-over-cream glaze characteristic of Rockingham ware, the surface shows heavy, expressive spotting and pooling created during the firing process. The interior basin includes a central opening, designed to reduce splash and aid in cleaning, while the broad base provides stability for floor use.
Spittoons of this type were common fixtures in public and semi-public interiors-such as saloons, barber shops, hotels, and railroad offices-during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when chewing tobacco was widespread. Rockingham ware was especially favored for these utilitarian objects due to its durability, ease of manufacture, and ability to disguise wear and staining through its dark, variegated glaze. Surviving examples remain popular as decorative objects, valued for their bold form and unmistakable historical context.
Shows general surface wear consistent with age and use. No visible cracks noted. Glaze variation and firing marks are inherent to the manufacturing process.

PARCEL SHIPPING
We ship smaller objects with UPS and USPS. All shipments are fully insured and adhere to carrier packing guidelines. Shipping costs for smaller items being shipped within the continental United States are free up to $100. If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. Please reach out to us for a free shipping quote on items you are interested in purchasing and note that international shipments may incur additional shipping cost.
FREIGHT SHIPPING
Free freight shipping is available for most large items. Conditions and restrictions apply: Free delivery is only offered on orders in the continental US. Shipping for freight items is free up to $500. If freight shipping costs exceed $500, the buyer is responsible for covering any amount over $500. Free freight delivery services include: delivery to a freight terminal, curbside delivery, and door-to-door delivery with a private carrier. White glove delivery services are *not included* in our free freight shipping policy, but may be available for a fee. Buyers may be subject to fees in cases where a delivery location is remote/difficult to access, or where a shipment requires special handling. Please contact us for shipping quotes and available services prior to purchasing.
All shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the buyer assumes all responsibility for the shipment the moment it leaves our loading dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles.
Delivery for freight items averages between 2-4 weeks. Longer delivery times are to be expected in cases where a delivery location is remote or when an order contains especially large or fragile items.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
