c. 1930s; imp. by J. B. Hirsch Company - New York City, NY

Matching pair of Art Deco "Bookseller" bookends by the J. B. Hirsch Company. Each figural composition depicts a straining bookseller or porter moving a two-wheeled cart stacked precariously with books. The opposing figures create a balanced mirrored presentation when placed at either end of a shelf.

The figures and carts are formed from patinated cast metal with warm brass-colored highlights emphasizing the clothing, book bindings, wheels, and modeled details. Each man is fitted with a separately molded "Ivorine" head, while the composition is mounted to a rectangular polished black stone base with felt pads underneath. Both heads are stamped "FRANCE" between the hairline and collar.

Founded in New York City in 1907 by Joseph Hirsch, the J. B. Hirsch Company became particularly known for importing decorative figural bookends, lamps, and small sculptures from France. Its designs frequently combined patinated cast metal with separately molded Ivorine or celluloid elements intended to evoke more costly chryselephantine bronze-and-ivory sculpture.

Overall in good antique condition. Both stone bases exhibit scattered discoloration, cloudy spotting, surface scratches, pitting, edge wear, and minor chips, as shown. The metal figures retain extensive age-related patina with areas of oxidation, rubbing, finish loss, and exposed brass-colored highlights. The wheelbarrow handles are bent behind the men's hands. Both figures are slightly loose on their bases. The Ivorine heads appear to have broken loose and been reglued at some point; one has a noticeable gap where the head meets the collar, while adhesive residue is visible beneath the chin of the other. Felt pads remain attached to the undersides and exhibit age-related wear, soiling, and minor lifting.

Each: 7.5" L x 3.25" W x 5.5" H
