c. 1906-1910; Hanna Engineering Works - Chicago, IL

Exceptionally uncommon "Silent Salesman" working mechanical demonstrator created to illustrate the patented motion of the Hanna fluid-pressure riveting machine. Constructed from nonmagnetic silver-toned metal with brass-toned pivot fasteners, the model presents a miniature cutaway-style arrangement of the machine's piston, compound levers, connecting rods, riveter frame, and vertically traveling die. Moving the mechanism demonstrates how the piston's motion is transferred through the articulated linkage to operate the riveting die, providing prospective industrial customers with a portable, self-contained explanation of the full-size machine.

The face is extensively engraved with operating information, including "Piston Travel 12," "Die Travel 4," and a graduated scale indicating the point at which maximum pressure begins and continues through the end of the stroke. Additional inscriptions identify Hanna Engineering Works at 820 Elston Avenue in Chicago and state, "This model is loaned only-please return when it has served its mission." The upper inscription identifies it as a "Silent Salesman Demonstrating the Hanna Riveter Motion" and records the patent date of June 12, 1906. The reverse is plain, allowing the dimensional mechanism and its movement to remain the visual focus.

Hanna Engineering Works was founded by engineer Elmer E. Hanna in 1900 and incorporated in 1901, developing from its early screen-shaking machinery into a significant Chicago manufacturer of riveting equipment, pneumatic cylinders, valves, and other industrial machinery.

Item is in very good condition, and the demonstration mechanism operates as intended. Slight rubbing marks are present where the moving components travel across adjacent metal surfaces. The piece exhibits overall surface wear, scratches, oxidation, and an age-appropriate industrial patina, including mottled discoloration across the reverse. All engraved lettering, scales, instructions, and company information remain clear and legible. Metal is nonmagnetic.
