Heavily cast bronze planter featuring a continuous high-relief frieze of cranes in flight amid swirling cloud forms and stylized wave ground. The upper register is richly textured with incised and stippled patterning, creating depth behind the raised avian figures. Twin loop handles terminate in sculptural, bud-like mounts that integrate seamlessly into the decorative band. The body swells gently from a narrow foot to a broad rim, the surface carrying a deep brown patina with areas of natural verdigris oxidation that accentuate the relief work. The interior shows a turquoise oxidation consistent with age and use.

Planters of this type were commonly produced during the Meiji period, when Japanese bronze workshops combined traditional symbolism-cranes representing longevity and good fortune-with export-ready decorative appeal. The carving here is crisp and dimensional, particularly in the layered feathers and cloud scrolls, suggesting skilled hand-finishing after casting. The planter remains affixed to a carved wooden base designed to elevate the vessel and allow drainage from the bottom, indicating it was intended for functional horticultural use rather than as a sealed cachepot.

Shows age-appropriate tarnish and surface oxidation throughout. Interior oxidation present. The pot is intentionally not watertight at the bottom to allow drainage. No cracks or structural breaks observed.
