1860s-1890s

Highly detailed working demonstration model illustrating the construction and operation of a deep-well hand pump above and below ground. The painted cast-metal pump head is mounted on a beveled wooden platform representing the ground surface, while the exposed lower assembly displays the pump rods, paired cylinders, connecting pipes, braces, and valve housings normally concealed within the well. A white funnel mounted beside the pump head allows liquid to be introduced into the demonstration system.

Operating the long hand lever activates the rods and underground mechanical components. The pump head retains decorative cast detailing, a curved discharge spout, turned handle terminal, articulated linkage, and warm ochre-colored finish. The below-ground mechanism is highlighted in red with contrasting brass-toned cylinders and fittings, making the internal operation readily visible.

In good condition, and the mechanical linkage operates when the handle is moved. The pump head and underground components exhibit substantial pigment loss, producing scattered oxidation and surface patina. Decorative detailing remains clearly visible on the pump. The painted wooden platform shows finish loss, scratches, staining, separations at several joints, and general wear. The supporting steel display stand appears to have sustained a break and subsequently been rewelded. Welded repairs are visible at all four corners, including the corner supporting the upright. The stand also exhibits oxidation, discoloration, and surface wear.
