c. 1972; mfd. for U.S. Geological Survey by Hubbard Scientific Inc., Chippewa Falls, WI

Large-format raised relief topographic map of the Knoxville quadrangle, covering portions of eastern Tennessee and adjoining areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The map is based on U.S. Geological Survey data at a 1:250,000 scale and features vacuum-formed relief that translates contour lines into pronounced three-dimensional terrain. Mountain ranges, river valleys, and elevation changes across the Great Smoky Mountains region are rendered with striking depth, while printed overlays identify roads, waterways, towns, and boundaries. Yellow-highlighted urban areas emphasize regional population centers, with Knoxville prominently labeled near the center.

This example was produced by Hubbard Scientific Inc. for the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency during the Cold War era, when raised relief maps were widely used for education, planning, and military reference. The edition is marked NI 17-1, Revised 1972, aligning with a period of updated cartographic standards and expanded regional infrastructure. Housed in a simple wood frame, the piece reads as both a functional geographic document and a sculptural object, bridging scientific utility and mid-20th-century graphic presentation.

Shows light wear consistent with age, including minor surface undulation to the relief sheet and scattered edge wear to the frame. No major losses observed.
