c. 1930s/1940s; Holland Furnace Co. - Holland, MI

Vintage scale model furnace.

This piece represents one of the many furnaces manufactured by Holland. It is a detailed model manufactured from aluminum and cast iron with a fan and lighted interior, designed to mimic the look of an active furnace, which is powered on by a rear switch.

The Holland Furnace Company was established by John P. Kolla and his son-in-law A. H. Landwehr in 1906. The company initially focused on producing coal-fired furnaces. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Holland Furnace diversified into oil and gas-fired furnaces, thus expanding across the United States to operate in "forty-four states... [with] 475 branch and sub-branch offices... [and] has a field organization of approximately 5000 employees" (Holland Furnace Company v. F.T.C, 1961). With that expansion came an aggressive sales campaign that included salesman, including the one with this 250A Furnace, frightening homeowners at home minding their own business into believing their furnace was potentially a deadly conflagration ready to take the lives of everyone in the neighborhood. By the early 1950s, this caught the attention of The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which ended Holland's door-to-door scare tactic campaign in the 1950s. Holland wasn't able to recover its reputation and went out of business by 1966.

Appears to be a complete sample and is in working order; lamp and fan rewired in-shop. Exhibits some paint loss, dents, and scuffs.
