c. 1900s/1910s; Egerman & Randolph/Victor Talking Machine Co. - Camden, NJ

Antique wooden phonograph shipping crate.

This piece was used to ship a Victor (prior to RCA) phonograph, likely a floor-length model given the crate's size. The crate was shipped to the buyer from Egerman & Randolph, an Aurora, IL Victor dealer. These Victor dealers remained fairly lowkey throughout their time in operation, with only a small blurb in the December 1911 Talking Machine World and Novelty News providing evidence of their existence. Well, that and this crate.
The crate features the iconic Victor (and later RCA) "His Master's Voice" graphic that depicts the company mascot, Nipper, reacting to hearing his owner's voice on the phonograph. In place of a standard glued or nailed panel, this crate includes a door held in place by two hinges. The overall construction is pine and plywood with finger-jointed corners and original stenciled shipping information. Rare to find intact, these crates were often discarded after delivery, making this an exceptional survivor of early American music marketing and distribution.

Overall wear on the crate, but it remains in great and stable condition. The paper litho ads that are adhered to two sides of the crate are in good condition with minor losses.
