c. 1890s; (possibly) Judd Manufacturing Co. - Wallingford, CT

Cast iron figural inkwell base featuring a man and woman riding a tandem bicycle, rendered in original polychrome paint. Note that this is a 'lady-front' tandem, the most popular style from 1895 to 1899. The affectionate pair leans toward one another as their bicycles rest on a decorative scrolled base. At center is a recessed circular well designed to hold a removable glass ink insert (now absent).

Figural inkwells of this era often blended whimsy with utility, appealing to the late Victorian fascination with novelty objects for desks and parlors. The tandem bicycle motif captures the popularity of cycling at the turn of the 20th century, a period when it symbolized both modern leisure and courtship. The back is impressed with "PAT'D," indicating a registered design of its time.

The piece shows age wear, chipping to the original paint, and surface oxidation, though much of the polychrome finish remains intact.

Shipping costs for smaller items being shipped within the continental United States are free up to $100. If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. FREIGHT SHIPPING

Free freight shipping is available for most large items. Conditions and restrictions apply: Free delivery is only offered on orders in the continental US. Shipping for freight items is free up to $500. If freight shipping costs exceed $500, the buyer is responsible for covering any amount over $500. Free freight delivery services include: delivery to a freight terminal, curbside delivery, and door-to-door delivery with a private carrier. White glove delivery services are *not included* in our free freight shipping policy, but may be available for a fee. Buyers may be subject to fees in cases where a delivery location is remote/difficult to access, or where a shipment requires special handling. Please contact us for shipping quotes and available services prior to purchasing. 

All shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the buyer assumes all responsibility for the shipment the moment it leaves our loading dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles. 

Delivery for freight items averages between 2-4 weeks. Longer delivery times are to be expected in cases where a delivery location is remote or when an order contains especially large or fragile items.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
