WWII-Era Railroad Safety "U.S.A. Has Right of Way" Poster
1943; Eastern Printing Corp. - New York, NY
Vintage wartime railroad safety poster.
The Association of American Railroads is a trade organization representing both freight and commuter railway transportation. It was formed on October 12, 1934 by the merger of five organizations: The American Railway Association, The Association of Railway Executives, The Bureau of Railroad Economics, The Railway Accounting Officers Association, and The Railway Treasury Officers Association. By the 1940s, train wrecks with vehicles were frequent and deadly enough to cause governmental intervention. Automated railroad crossing warning signals had been around since the early 1900s, but it wasn't until the 1920s and 30s that people understood the need for them to be at every railway/roadway crossing. Ten years after this poster was created, President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System, formalized by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, would build highways that would avoid railroad crossings for long-distance automobile travel.
Dated 1943 in lower left corner. Poster has several tears or missing pieces as well as discoloration. Fair condition.
