c. 1880s/1890s; George A Clark & Bros Inc. - Newark, NJ

Oversized thread spool figural sign.

This piece advertises Clark's O.N.T. (Our New Thread) cotton spools, one of the many textile products manufactured by the Clark Thread Company. The sign takes the form of a spool of cotton placed in two wooden brackets (attached).

The Clark Thread Company came to us from Paisley, Scotland, in the mid-1700s, where the Clark family had been known for their embroidery thread. During the Napoleonic wars, silk manufacturers were destroyed around Europe, leaving English and Scottish weavers scrambling. The Clark family created a silk heddle twine as a substitute for silk and combined it with wool to manufacture Kashmir-style shawls that were also lost due to the war's blockade. This thinner silk-like thread needed to be wound spools differently than thicker embroidery thread. Hence came the invention of the straight cylinder spool. In the 1840s, the Clark Company began to send agents to the United States. The George A. Clark & Brother company was formed to manufacture thread out of Newark, New Jersey in 1864, with the product branded as J. & J. Clark. This American branch of the Clark Company became known as Clark & Co. in 1879. In 1896, a merger happened between James Coats and the Clark company to form J & P Coats, Ltd. This large advertising spool would've been created before that merger.

Exhibits minor signs of wear, including some paint stains and light scratches.
