c. 1920s

Early folding camping chairs constructed with hardwood frames and original striped canvas sling seats, designed to collapse flat for transport and storage. The frames feature cross-braced legs joined with riveted metal hardware, allowing the chairs to open and close smoothly while maintaining a stable, low-slung seating position. The canvas forms a relaxed, hammock-like profile when in use, reinforced at stress points and trimmed in heavier fabric at the edges. Lightweight, portable, and durable, these chairs reflect the practical design language of early 20th-century outdoor and leisure furniture.

This style of sling-backed folding chair is well documented in period photography from the 1910s-1920s and appears in outdoor scenes associated with figures such as Thomas Edison, who favored the same collapsible chair style for camping and recreational outings. While these chairs are not claimed to have been used by Edison himself, they represent the same widely used and culturally familiar form seen in contemporary images of early American leisure and travel.

Both chairs show age-appropriate patina throughout, including wear to the canvas and surface wear to the wood frames. Despite cosmetic wear, both chairs remain sturdy, functional, and ready for use. No major structural damage observed.

Each chair: approx. 18" W x 21" D x 32" H
Seat height: approx. 17"
