Antique Mutual Assurance Fire Mark
Late 19th Century/Early 20th Century
Cast iron fire mark for The Mutual Assurance Company for Insuring Houses from Loss by Fire, or "Green Tree Insurance Company" of Philadelphia.
Cast iron plaques of varying designs would be affixed to buildings insured by different companies so that, in the event of fire, it could be deduced what, if any, insurance the owner had. This particular plaque was the symbol of the Mutual Assurance Company, in use from 1784-1996. It features the image of a tree, which would occasionally be painted green; hence the nickname "Green Tree Insurance Company". The tree portion would molded from the back instead of being placed as a solid piece to save on the metal used and allow for faster cooling.
This piece is essentially rusted over, however the details are still visible due to the longevity of cast iron.
