1880s-1900s; Cedarburg Wire & Wire-Nail Factory - Cedarburg, WI

Solid cast iron nail heading block used in the production of cut and early wire nails, hand-painted on the side "CEDARBURG NAIL." The rectangular block features two aligned rows of blind holes in graduated sizes, designed to accept nail shanks while the exposed end was struck to form the nail head. Wear patterns within the holes show consistent iron-on-iron impact, indicating sustained shop use rather than demonstration or display.

Cedarburg's Wire & Wire-Nail Factory operated along Cedar Creek and is documented in late-19th-century illustrations and photographs as part of the town's early industrial infrastructure. Tools like this heading block would have been essential bench-top equipment in nail production, allowing small factories and mill-adjacent shops to efficiently head nails in multiple gauges. The hand-painted identification reflects practical shop labeling common in shared or multi-station industrial environments.

Shows uniform surface oxidation, edge rounding, and interior hole wear consistent with prolonged use. No cracks or structural defects observed. Paint remains legible with expected loss and abrasion.

If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. FREIGHT SHIPPING

Free freight shipping is available for most large items. Conditions and restrictions apply: Free delivery is only offered on orders in the continental US. Shipping for freight items is free up to $500. If freight shipping costs exceed $500, the buyer is responsible for covering any amount over $500. Free freight delivery services include: delivery to a freight terminal, curbside delivery, and door-to-door delivery with a private carrier. White glove delivery services are *not included* in our free freight shipping policy, but may be available for a fee. Buyers may be subject to fees in cases where a delivery location is remote/difficult to access, or where a shipment requires special handling. Please contact us for shipping quotes and available services prior to purchasing. 

All shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the buyer assumes all responsibility for the shipment the moment it leaves our loading dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles. 

Delivery for freight items averages between 2-4 weeks. Longer delivery times are to be expected in cases where a delivery location is remote or when an order contains especially large or fragile items.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
