c. 1870s/1880s; The Reading Hardware Company - Reading, PA

Clamp-on cast iron apple parer featuring a large open-spoke drive wheel with geared reduction system, adjustable peeling arm, and fork-mounted apple spindle. The frame terminates in a table clamp with heart-form tightening key, allowing the machine to secure firmly to a work surface during operation. The upper cutting assembly retains its toothed guide wheel and spring tension mechanism, designed to maintain consistent blade contact as the apple rotates. Heavy cast construction with ribbed structural arms reflects late 19th century kitchen engineering-purpose-built, mechanical, and unapologetically exposed in its gearing.

This form corresponds to William M. Griscom's May 22, 1877 patent (No. 191,138), an improvement in apple-paring machines manufactured in Reading, Pennsylvania. Griscom's innovation repositioned the clamping frame for greater stability and cleaner paring discharge away from the gearing, improving both safety and efficiency. The Reading Hardware Company-founded in 1886 and growing from earlier regional ironworks-became one of America's major producers of hardware, tools, and domestic iron goods, distributing nationally during the height of Victorian industrial expansion.

Appears to be in working order with oxidation present throughout, including uniform surface rust and age-consistent wear to the gears, clamp screw, and blade assembly. Structurally solid with intact gearing and handle.
