Antique No. 632 Vegetable Cutter by Tucker & Dorsey
c. 1900s; Tucker & Dorsey Manufacturing Company - Indianapolis, IN
Wooden-framed vegetable cutter bearing stamped marking "632 INDIANAPOLIS" to the end rail, featuring a fixed steel slicing blade set at an angle within a rectangular hardwood trough. The construction consists of two parallel side rails joined by cross members, housing a darkened steel cutting plate with a secondary adjustable section secured by screws. A thumb screw adjustment on the side allows for minor blade positioning. The form is consistent with Robert L. Dorsey's patented vegetable cutter (U.S. Patent No. 910,652, Jan. 26, 1909), assigned to Tucker & Dorsey Manufacturing Co.
Designed for slicing cabbage and other vegetables efficiently and uniformly, this cutter reflects early 20th century domestic and small-scale commercial kitchen innovation. The hardwood frame offers durability and stability, while the steel blade provides consistent slicing through gravity and manual pressure. Its straightforward construction and stamped identification anchor it firmly in Indianapolis manufacturing history during the era of patented kitchen devices.
Surface wear consistent with age and use, including oxidation and darkening to the steel blade, light scuffs and finish wear to the wood frame, and minor edge wear. Structurally sound with blade intact.
