c. 1910s/1920s; Visible Card Index Co. - New Haven, CT

Quarter-sawn oak standing filing cabinet with six shallow drawers fitted for visible index card storage, retaining original japanned brass label pulls and a tilting drawer mechanism designed for rapid reference access in office, library, or industrial record-keeping environments. The cabinet is elevated on a matching oak stand with square legs and stretcher supports, giving the piece a distinctly architectural upright profile while positioning the drawers at a comfortable working height. Each drawer opens outward and tilts downward on internal supports, revealing green felt-lined writing or sorting surfaces intended to aid in reviewing and organizing index cards, customer accounts, inventories, engineering records, or catalog systems.

The Visible Card Index system emerged during the early twentieth century as businesses, institutions, and factories increasingly adopted standardized filing and efficiency methods tied to the expanding clerical and administrative culture of the Progressive Era. Cabinets such as this reflect the transition from traditional ledger books to modular indexed filing systems, allowing information to be sorted, expanded, and cross-referenced more efficiently.

Shows moderate age-related wear throughout including scratches, finish wear, edge abrasions, scattered losses to finish along lower edges and top corners, and areas of discoloration consistent with long-term office use. Drawers retain functioning tilt mechanisms and original hardware. Interior felt surfaces show light wear and discoloration. Cabinet retains a strong overall structure with visible age and patina throughout.
