Antique figural painted tin trade sign.

This piece takes the form of an antique mortar and pestle, one of the most important tools used by practitioners of medicine for centuries. This tool was used in the production of foods, spices, herbs, and extracts that needed to be ground and/or mixed into powder. Due to the lack of literacy at the time, figural trade signs were important to apothecaries and pharmacies so people who could not read would still know where to get their medications.

The sign is constructed from tin and painted to look like brass; it is affixed to a wrought iron wall mount. Bracket is heavy cast iron and is not original to sign, but is an addition from Industrial Artifacts. The bracket appears to be in excellent condition and is ready for use.

While the bracket is quite heavy, the mortar and pestle is lightweight, and can be lifted by one person.

The sign has paint loss on the top, as well as on the mortar handle. There are dents along the edges of the bottom of the sign, but most of the paint on the sign is still stable.

29" dia and 34" H
Bracket: 30" L x 22" H
