Wooden animal shipping crate constructed with slatted sides, galvanized steel corner reinforcements, and a hinged front access door fitted with a wire mesh viewing panel. The door retains its original latch with provision for a padlock, while a chain-mounted leather carrying handle remains in place above the opening. A notable feature is the integrated metal water bowl mounted inside the crate, which can be filled externally through the capped fill port located on the top, allowing an animal to be watered without opening the door. Designed for transporting small animals by rail or other commercial carriers, crates of this type balanced ventilation, security, and onboard access to water during extended journeys.

Animal shipping crates became increasingly common during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as railroads and express companies expanded the transport of household pets, breeding stock, and exhibition animals. Built-in watering systems such as this example helped improve animal welfare by allowing attendants to replenish water during transit without risking escape.

The crate remains in good overall condition with expected cosmetic wear from age and use. Wood surfaces display scattered scratches, finish wear, minor dents, and handling marks throughout. Galvanized steel corner straps and hardware exhibit light oxidation and age-related patina. The hinged door, latch, wire mesh panel, integrated watering system, and removable metal water bowl remain present. Interior shows honest wear consistent with use while remaining structurally sound.
