c. 1900s-1910s; Elgin National Coffee Mill Co. - Elgin, IL

Cast iron double-wheel coffee grinder with original red painted finish and gold accent strip.

Produced by the Elgin National Coffee Mill Co. of Elgin, Illinois, this early 20th-century grinder represents the height of American hardware craftsmanship. Large dual flywheels-each cast with the maker's name-power the internal burrs, with a wood-handled crank to drive the mechanism. The funnel-shaped hopper feeds into the grinding chamber, discharging ground coffee into the tin catchbox at the base.

The Elgin National Coffee Mill Co. was one of the premier manufacturers of commercial grinders during this period, supplying mills, general stores, and restaurants nationwide. Their heavy-duty castings and bold enamel finishes made their machines both functional and visually striking. Today, pieces like this serve as decorative artifacts of small-town mercantile trade, standing as much for industrial design as for culinary history.

Some wear to the paint is visible, along with small patches of surface rust inside the hopper. Overall, the mechanism turns smoothly, and the grinder remains in solid condition for its age.
