1851; Godey's Lady's Book - Philadelphia, PA

Hand-colored fashion plate titled "Godey's Americanized Paris Fashions" housed in an antique ogee frame with faux-grained finish. The print, designed by Jules David and engraved by Joseph Ives Pease, depicts two women in mid-19th century attire, one holding a parasol and the other a handheld brass telescope to view the train passing on the bridge in the background. Colors remain soft but legible, showing delicate pinks, creams, and muted earth tones. Framed pictures such as this one often hung in parlors as both decoration and a marker of refinement, bridging period taste with aspirational fashion.

Godey's Lady's Book was a highly popular and influential American women's magazine that featured fashion plates, literature, recipes, and household advice, becoming the leading women's periodical of its time with a circulation of 150,000 by the Civil War. It was founded in 1830 by Louis A. Godey. Sarah Josepha Hale joined Godey's in 1837 after merging her own magazine, Ladies' Magazine, with Godey's, and served as editor for 40 years. The magazing lated until it was aborbed by another company and ceased publication in 1898.
