c. 1890s; John W. Iliff & Co. - Chicago

Pair of antique oak map cabinets with maps adhered to the interior.

These pieces feature what appear to be period-appropriate U.S. maps produced by Rand McNally. This is interesting as the manufacturer of this piece, John W. Illif & Co., was also a producer of maps at the time; in fact, they were more known for their maps than map cabinets. Each drawer corresponds to a state in the U.S. with the name of the state engraved into the handle. Some states have had updated (likely 1920s or 1930s) Standard Oil maps pasted over the originals; these maps include more detailed information and legends. There are minimal design embellishments on this piece with the exception of beveled paneling on the sides and a tempered glass top.

Exhibits minor signs of wear including some missing handles on drawers, with the maps in those drawers also missing. Two drawers in the upper portion, Iowa and Montana, have bent handles (downward and upward, respectively) that don't interfere with the overall function, but should be noted. There are also light scratches and scuffs along the wood exterior.

Large cabinet: 29" W x 21.5" D x 14.5" H
Smaller cabinet is 29" W x 21.5" D x 8" H (without base)
Base: 8" H
