1860 & 1882; Blanchard and Lea - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / Cincinnati Medical Publishing Company - Cincinnati, Ohio

Pair of antique medical reference books representing two distinct branches of 19th-century clinical study. One volume is titled Eclectic Practice of Medicine by Scudder, bound in full leather with a paneled spine and gilt lettering, reflecting its role as a working reference within the Eclectic medical movement. The second volume, The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery, addresses contemporary surgical theory and technique of the period. Both books are substantial in size, with dense text and durable bindings characteristic of professional medical works intended for repeated consultation.

Notably, The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery bears an ink inscription dated 1874, signed A. F. MacLoed, suggesting early ownership by a medical professional or student. Such inscriptions were common in working reference libraries and add a layer of personal provenance, anchoring the book to a specific moment in 19th-century medical practice.

Both volumes are in antique condition. Bindings show significant wear with loosening and separation beginning at the spine and hinges; handling with care is recommended. Covers exhibit staining, edge wear, and surface degradation. Interior pages are largely intact and clean relative to age, with scattered foxing and age toning. Handwritten notations are present as photographed, and an original envelope from a previous owner is tucked within one volume, adding provenance interest.
