Single-Sided Tin Tobacco Sign
c. 1900s
Tin advertising sign for Soldier Boy tobacco.
Soldier Boy tobacco was manufactured by The B. Leidersdorf Co. of Milwaukee, WI. The company was started by Bernhardt Leidersdorf, a German immigrant who stirred up controversy after death for his manufacture of a line of tobacco with a racist name. It didn't seem to hurt his reputation in life as he served as a Republican alderman and debt commissioner in 1880s Milwaukee, in addition to running a highly successful company.
This piece is a relic of that time and, despite no visual association to the other line of tobacco, goes to show that occasionally hatred was (unfortunately) profitable.
The sign exhibits moderate to heavy scratching across the face, although the colors and text remain legible and vibrant.
