c. 1940s; The General Biological Supply House (trade name Turtox Products), Chicago, IL

The General Biological Supply House (GBSH) was started in Chicago in 1913 by Morris Miller Wells while attending the University of Chicago. Its humble beginnings were run out of a basement office and began to expand rapidly, with Wells still in command. He completed his PhD in 1915 and continued to stay at UC as an assistant professor until 1918 when he dedicated himself full-time to GBSH - with plenty of help from family. He began selling biology supplies under the trade name Turtox with help from Frank Lillie of the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole.
The two became well-known for their precise anatomical structures of various species, namely marine models supplied to educators during the November-April off-season for fishing; the only exception was the preservation of dogfish for educators, which was due to its breeding season and availability. The continued to produce models of numerous species well into the 1960s until MBL sold its shares to branch out on their own in 1967.

This chalkware anatomical frog model is painted a deep blue, indicative of the Jewell series manufactured in the 1940s and 1950s. Later models would adopt colors more representative of the individual animals.
It exhibits moderate damage to the top of the head and paint chipping, however the majority of the structure remains intact.
