Four-drawer oak spool cabinet with reverse-painted glass advertising inserts reading "GEORGE A. CLARK / SOLE AGENT / COTTON / SPOOL." These countertop cabinets were supplied to general stores and dry goods merchants to both store and display spools of Clark's thread while advertising the brand to customers.

The case is constructed of solid oak with paneled sides and dentil molding across the top edge. Each drawer features dovetail joinery, original porcelain-and-brass pulls, and reverse-painted gold and red glass panels with bold black lettering. Cabinets of this type were functional sales tools in the late Victorian period, providing organized storage and a highly visible brand presence at the counter.

George Aitken Clark (1823-1873), originally from Paisley, Scotland, joined his family's established thread manufacturing enterprise and in 1856 expanded into the U.S.-laying the groundwork for what became the Clark Thread Co. in Newark, New Jersey. He and his brother William built a state-of-the-art mill in Newark by 1865 and marketed their breakthrough machine-ready six-cord thread model known as O.N.T. (Our New Thread).

Condition is very good for age, with minor surface wear and scuffs to the oak, along with craquelure and loss to the gilt back-painted glass consistent with 120+ years of handling. Please note the crack on the front of the "COTTON" drawer. The drawers operate smoothly, and the cabinet retains an appealing warm patina.
