c. 1880s-1890s; A.H. Andrews Co. - Chicago

A classic late-19th-century school desk by A.H. Andrews Co., one of the premier American manufacturers of educational and institutional furnishings during the era of standardized public schooling. This example features the company's signature cast-iron end standards-rich with scrollwork, medallions, and geometric openwork-paired with curved maple slats that form both the seat and back. The writing surface shows the familiar inkwell cutout and raised pencil rest, all hallmarks of an Andrews desk built for durability and high traffic.

Form met function in these desks: the cast-iron frame was engineered to anchor into wood floors in long classroom rows, while the bentwood seat provided just enough flex for comfort. The piece remains a grounded example of early American mass-produced furniture designed to endure decades of daily use.

Shows wear consistent with age and schoolhouse service, including scratches, surface wear to the wood, oxidation on the iron feet, and general finish wear throughout.
