Late 19th century decorative keyaki (Japanese elm) cabinet.

An exceptional Meiji-period shadona (display and storage) cabinet intricately crafted from Japanese elm and richly inlaid with yosegi zaiku parquetry. Larger and more ornate than typical domestic examples, this cabinet bridges functional design and fine art. The marquetry incorporates multiple geometric patterns-checkerboard, starburst, and zig-zag-executed in a range of contrasting native woods including mulberry, spindle tree, katsura, camphor, and Japanese cucumber.

Pagoda-inspired in its tiered composition, the cabinet features a variety of open shelves, drawers, and compartments across its height, each framed by fine decorative banding and delicate joinery. The density of inlay work on a piece of this scale would have required master craftsmanship, as such detail was more commonly reserved for smaller boxes or miniature cabinetry.

Exhibits minor wear consistent with age and overall structural fragility. A small envelope containing spare trim and inlay elements is included-these were leftover during restoration and have not been reattached.
