Painted wood wall cabinet with reverse-painted advertising glass door.

This late 19th-century apothecary or store cabinet once housed bottles of Dr. J.H. McLean's widely marketed patent medicines. The bowed glass front is lettered in bold white text: "Dr. J.H. McLean - St. Louis, MO," a reference to the company founded in 1845 by John H. McLean, a pioneer in patent medicine who claimed his remedies cured everything from liver complaints to "female weaknesses." Cabinets like this would have been placed on drugstore counters or hung on walls, serving as both product storage and branded advertising. A rare surviving example of 19th-century medical advertising, reflecting the era's fascination with cure-alls and traveling remedies.

The cabinet retains its original paint, worn to a soft cream with scattered surface losses and age checking. Interior shelves are intact, with visible wear consistent with heavy use. The glass front shows expected scratches but remains stable and legible.

If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. FREIGHT SHIPPING

Free freight shipping is available for most large items. Conditions and restrictions apply: Free delivery is only offered on orders in the continental US. Shipping for freight items is free up to $500. If freight shipping costs exceed $500, the buyer is responsible for covering any amount over $500. Free freight delivery services include: delivery to a freight terminal, curbside delivery, and door-to-door delivery with a private carrier. White glove delivery services are *not included* in our free freight shipping policy, but may be available for a fee. Buyers may be subject to fees in cases where a delivery location is remote/difficult to access, or where a shipment requires special handling. Please contact us for shipping quotes and available services prior to purchasing. 

All shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the buyer assumes all responsibility for the shipment the moment it leaves our loading dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles. 

Delivery for freight items averages between 2-4 weeks. Longer delivery times are to be expected in cases where a delivery location is remote or when an order contains especially large or fragile items.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
