Antique Indian Hand Separator Oil 1-Gal. Can
c. 1910s; Indian Refining Co. - New York City, NY
Original one-gallon lithographed oil can advertising Indian Hand Separator Oil, produced by the Indian Refining Company. The can features the company's iconic Native American profile logo above bold "INDIAN" lettering, with extensive period advertising and product information printed on the side panels. In addition to promoting Hand Separator Oil, the can lists numerous "Indian Specialties," including harness oil, coach oil, harvester oil, gas engine oil, cylinder oil, cattle spray, belt dressing, paraffin wax, and graphite grease. Detailed usage instructions for farm machinery, cream separators, leather care, and agricultural applications further illustrate the broad range of products offered by the company during the early twentieth century. The can retains its original wire handle, angled pouring spout, and threaded cap.
Founded in 1906, the Indian Refining Company became one of America's best-known independent petroleum companies, distributing lubricants, fuels, and automotive products throughout the United States under its distinctive Native American branding before eventually becoming part of the Texas Company (Texaco).
Exhibits heavy age-related wear throughout. Surfaces display extensive oxidation, rust, staining, scratches, abrasions, and significant loss of original pigmentation to both the advertising graphics and instructional text. Numerous dents and deformations are present, particularly along the lower quarter of the can and base area. Areas of corrosion, finish loss, and surface pitting are visible throughout. Wire handle remains present and functional, raising upright and folding flat against the top surface. The pouring spout and threaded cap remain present. Evidence of an apparent historic solder or welding repair is visible around the main filler cap.
