1920s; Hamilton Manufacturing Co. - Two Rivers, WI

Substantial oak flat-file cabinet by Hamilton Manufacturing Company, constructed as two modular five-drawer sections with a fitted wood top. Its ten broad, shallow drawers were designed to keep blueprints, maps, architectural drawings, artwork, printing materials, and other oversized documents stored flat and readily accessible.

Each drawer features a pair of rounded wood pulls with a recessed central handhold and label opening. The richly figured oak exterior is complemented by paneled sides, molded case edges, and clean, light-toned wood drawer interiors. A surviving Hamilton nameplate appears between the upper and lower sections. The cabinet is presently raised on later black metal hairpin legs, giving the early industrial storage piece a lower, more contemporary profile while preserving its two-part stacked construction.

Founded by James Edward Hamilton in Two Rivers, WI in 1880, Hamilton Manufacturing Company became the country's largest producer of wood type and expanded into specialized printing-room furniture, drafting tables, filing systems, dental cabinetry, and laboratory furniture.

File is in very good condition. Exhibits rubbing along the upper edges of several drawers. There are two small chips: one on the face of the lowest drawer and another on the back near the top. The back shows several additional small chips and a series of longer gouges. Two small stains are present on the right side of two drawers in the lower section. Additional minor scratches, finish variation, and age-related wear are visible throughout, as photographed. Hairpin legs are later additions.
