1920s; Hardwick & Magee - Philadelphia, PA

This reverse-painted on glass (ROG) sign advertises the Cameo style rugs with Wilton weaving produced by Hardwick and Magee. Hardwick and Magee was a prominent carpet mill in Philadelphia, founded as a sole proprietorship in 1837 and later continuing as a partnership until its incorporation in 1910. In the 1920s, the company began using the famed Jacquard loom that was able to give a thicker, more velvety pile that was (in their terms) comparable to the more expensive Persian rugs and tapestries. The company's "Cameo" design typically included a floral motif that stood out from the background, often through the use of contrasting colors and three-dimensional effects,

The sign is in great shape for being 100 years old, with no notable damage to the glass. The frame comes with a hanger, and the entire advertising piece is structurally sound. Some of the paint and gilding are worn mostly under the center "Cameo Wilton Rugs" area. Please refer to the photos for condition and details. The last pic is an advertisement from the St. Joseph Gazette, Wednesday, June 23, 1926 - page 12.

This sign measures 15.5" x 11.5".
