c. 1910s-1920s; Green River Tobacco Co. - Owensboro, KY

This one-pound handled jug features a salt-glazed body with dark brown Albany slip top and original paper labels still largely intact on front and reverse. The principal label depicts the Old Green River logo in green and gold with a central vignette illustration, alongside the motto "The Smoke Without a Bite." Additional advertising text promotes the product as a substitute for cigars and cigarettes, while the back label lists the available blends-Granulated, Long Cut, and Ready Cut-offered in Mild, Medium, and Strong varieties.

Old Green River was one of the prominent regional tobacco brands of the early 20th century, marketed with the likeness of Pete Melcher, sole owner of the Green River Tobacco Company of Owensboro, Kentucky. Their packaging strategy included distinctive stoneware jugs, which doubled as both containers and advertising premiums.

This example shows significant paper loss and surface wear to the labels, particularly on the front panel, with staining and toning throughout. The ceramic body remains intact with no noted cracks or repairs, and the form retains its sturdy utilitarian profile. Surviving with labels largely present, it remains an evocative piece of early 20th century tobacco advertising and stoneware packaging.
