Painted wooden immigrant or steamer trunk with arched lid retaining hand-lettered identification reading "JULES D'HOOGE" and "ROCK ISLAND" across the top panel. Constructed with a simple plank-built body, hinged domed lid, and iron side carrying handles, the trunk reflects the durable, utilitarian construction associated with late 19th and early 20th century immigrant travel and household storage. The black-painted exterior contrasts with a lighter unfinished wood interior, while the curved lid profile provided additional interior capacity and helped shed moisture during transport.

Research associated with the name identifies Jules D'Hooge (1857-1930) as a Belgian immigrant born in Nevele, Belgium who emigrated to the United States in 1879 and settled at 317 9th St. in Rock Island, Illinois (now a vacant lot), where he worked for many years as a foreman at the Rock Island Plow Company. The trunk likely relates directly to this early Rock Island branch of the D'Hooge family, which continued through multiple generations in the region. The personalized lettering strongly suggests long-term ownership and practical use during relocation, storage, or travel within the immigrant household experience.

Shows moderate to heavy wear consistent with age and use including scratches, scuffs, abrasions, paint loss, edge wear, stains, and scattered surface discoloration throughout. Lid shows warping and unevenness along edges with scattered finish wear and losses to painted lettering. Interior retains age-related wear, staining, and surface marks from prolonged use and storage.
