c. 1880s/1890s; Office Specialty Manufacturing Co. - Rochester, NY

Monumental oak U.S. Document File cabinet designed for the organized storage of deeds, mortgages, wills, vouchers, and other folded legal papers. The tall architectural case features a molded projecting cornice, narrow decorative molding, paneled sides, and a bank of twenty-five individual document drawers arranged in five rows of five. Each drawer has a paneled front fitted with original japanned pull and framed label holder.

The drawers retain their interior compressor mechanisms, which secured folded papers upright while allowing individual documents to be examined or removed. An open lower section contains tall vertical dividers for additional document storage, with a narrow horizontal compartment beneath. The cabinet's combination of enclosed files and open pigeonholes made it particularly suitable for banks, courthouses, attorneys, government offices, and other institutions maintaining extensive paper records.

The Office Specialty Manufacturing Co. was incorporated in Rochester, NY, in 1889 and became known for the Shannon filing system and other labor-saving office equipment.

Overall great condition with some visible cracking along the grain, as photographed, most notably along one side panel. Additional age-related wear includes scattered scratches, small dents, finish variation, minor edge wear, and marks from institutional use. The japanned hardware remains present throughout, showing scattered finish loss, oxidation, and surface wear. Several label inserts are missing, torn, stained, or no longer legible. Drawers and lower dividers appear substantially complete.

34"W x 14.5"D x 96.5"H. Each of the card file drawers measures 5"W x 10"H x 11"D.
