Victorian dome-top steamer trunk with a wooden body, wooden slats, and black-painted metal edging, fastened with round brass-toned rivets and tacks. The arched lid has three curved slats with brass-toned clamps at the ends. The front has a brass-toned lock plate with a keyhole, three vertical slats with brass-toned end plates, and a horizontal slat along the base. Two black decorative cast-iron hinges join the lid at the back, a chain stay holds it open, and leather carrying handles on cast-iron mounts are fitted to each end. The interior is lined in a quilted red cotton print with small multicolored floral motifs, tacked in place with brass-toned tacks along the rim. The bottom is covered in sheet metal, and the trunk sits on small casters at the four corners.

Construction is solid, and the handles are sturdy. The wood is cracked from age in three places (see photos). Of the four casters, two roll, one is frozen, and one is missing. The bottom metal covering is holed and completely oxidized. The lock plate remains on the front, but the lock mechanism appears to have been removed, with only an indentation felt under the quilted lining. There is no key and no latch to keep the lid closed. The quilted lining is soiled from age and wear, and staples are visible reinforcing the tacking. The two front corners on the inside are worn, as is the wood near where the lock sat.
