c. 1890s-1910s

Monumental turn-of-the-century mercantile display counter measuring more than thirteen feet in length. The substantial dark-stained hardwood case combines a long glazed showcase with an architectural paneled base, book-matched figured veneers, carved moldings, and a deeply carved gadrooned lower apron. Gilt-finished animal-paw feet punctuate the front, lending the exceptionally long cabinet a dramatic Classical Revival presence.

The glazed upper section provides nearly twelve and a half feet of usable display space. Its broad red-felt presentation deck is visible through the glass top, front, and end panels, while a brass-toned interior rail incorporates approximately eighteen electric lights across the front of the case. Wood-framed sliding access panels with recessed brass pulls extend across the upper rear. A keyed lock is fitted beside the glass top, and a key is included.

The lower cabinet presents five large framed and figured panels across the public-facing side, separated by vertical molded stiles. The reverse retains broad paneled sections and two lower access doors, one positioned at either end. The original enclosed door is on the left when viewed from behind. The right-hand door is a new replacement opening into an unfinished-bottom compartment that permits the lighting cord to descend from the case. The left lower cabinet contains closely spaced horizontal wooden supports suitable for trays or shallow shelving.

This cabinet has undergone extensive structural modification, stabilization, and restoration. The structure was completely reframed and fitted with new supports because the base and upper sections were originally detached. A new solid back was fabricated using salvaged panels from a turn-of-the-century bar. The new rear door and replacement back elements were stained and toned to coordinate with the original case.

All display panels were newly felted in red, and new felt was installed in the upper channel supporting the glass. One top glass panel is a replacement; the remaining glass is reported to be original. A new electrical cord was installed for the interior lighting, which consists of approximately eighteen lights positioned along the front rail. All wooden components received three coats of polycrylic following the repair work.

Shows age-related scratches, scuffs, finish variation, small losses, dents, joint lines, veneer wear, and evidence of former use throughout. The carved apron and gilt-finished paw feet retain visible wear, rubbing, and areas of finish loss. Glass exhibits expected surface marks and minor imperfections. Brass-toned rails, pulls, locks, and other hardware display age-related patina. Restored and replacement sections remain distinguishable upon close inspection but have been toned to integrate visually with the original fabric.

Overall 158" x 28"D x 44.5"H. Interior usable space with red felt: 148"W x 21.5" x 8"H.

Right side cabinet on bottom: 11.75"W x 25"D x 21"H.

Left side cab on bottom: 6"W x 15"D x 24"H.
