c. 1900s-1920s

Remarkable prosthetic-limb salesman's sample collection comprising two articulated artificial legs, two separate leather thigh sections, a tall brown leather cowboy-style boot, two male foot forms or shoes, and two female foot forms with shoes. The miniature legs are carefully constructed with painted wooden components, articulated knee and ankle joints, leather sockets and braces, metal fasteners, cords, and miniature suspension hardware. A handwritten model notation remains visible inside the larger leg.

The accompanying footwear displays an equally impressive degree of craftsmanship. Included are miniature leather lace-up shoes, carved wooden lasts and foot forms, and a tall brown boot with a small metal spur. Together, the pieces would have allowed a traveling representative to demonstrate different prosthetic constructions, fittings, cosmetic treatments, footwear styles, and component options without transporting full-size limbs.

The collection is housed in a handmade reddish-brown wooden traveling case with a hinged lid, green felt lining, and three fitted interior subdivisions. Recessed impressions in the lid lining correspond with the forms stored below. A green and cream-colored plastic carrying handle is mounted to the exterior, while a small chain and hook arrangement serves as the front closure.

Case exterior exhibits scratches, soiling, finish loss, and edge wear as shown. A long crack is present across the bottom of the case, which also bears a dark-pigment marking that appears to read either "16" or "91." The plastic exterior handle may be a later replacement and shows wear from use. The latching mechanism appears to be an improvised replacement. Interior felt exhibits scattered wear, impressions, and light soiling but remains substantially intact, with all three subdivisions present.

Prosthetic samples are in very good overall condition with age-related wear to their painted, wooden, leather, metal, and cord components. Slight damage is present on the foot of the smaller articulated leg and on the larger shoe form, as shown. Leather components display creasing, scuffs, edge wear, and loose or fraying cords consistent with age and handling. No guarantee is made that the sample set is complete.
